The «SAO Incident» («SAO»-事件, SAO-jiken?) is the name given to the event beginning in November 2030 and ending in July 2033, considered to be the worst disaster in the worlds of games in the 2030s. It is the event in which 10,000 players were trapped in the first-ever VRMMORPG in history, «Sword Art Online».

Akihiko Kayaba[]

At the time of the incident, Akihiko Kayaba was 32 years old. He was a former member of the Shigemura Lab, a prestigious circle of talented university students who went on to forge huge careers in the field of VR mechanics including Akihiko himself, inventor of the NerveLinker and SAO as well as the spearhead that drove the rise of VRMMOs, Rinko Kōjiro, inventor of the «Medicuboid», the first-generation FullDive machine built primarily for use in hospitals, and Takeru Higa, one of three inventors of the third-generation «Soul Translator».
Invention of the NerveLinker[]

The «NerveLinker» is the second fully functional FullDive device ever made created by Akihiko Kayaba. By way of interacting with the user's «Fluctlight», the device provides a comprehensive FullDive experience with a realism that matches that of the real world to the point that the virtual experience brought about by the «NerveLinker» is confused to be reality. It is the device in which all SAO players used to log in to the death game.
